Making The Most Of Bath Time

Bathing your little one will be part of your daily routine, but for babies, toddlers and even preschoolers, bath time should be about more than just getting clean and winding down before bedtime. Bath time is actually brilliant for children’s development and playing with toys in the bath is encouraged from a really young age.

If you’ve never explored water play or bath play before and you don’t own any bath toys, it is definitely worthwhile purchasing some and they are amongst some of the best baby sensory toys that you can get. To help anyone who is interested in making bath time more fun and getting the most out of it development and learning-wise, keep reading today. Below are some different ways you can make bath time even more beneficial for your little one.

Splash around in the water

Bath time really is a sensory overload for babies and the water is a brilliant place for them to experiment and learn. One of the most simple, yet still very effective, things you can do with your little one in the bath is splash around in the water.

Not only is splashing lots of fun, but it will also help your little one to discover their different senses. Whilst splashing, they will feel the wetness on their skin, hear the sound of the splash, see the water moving around and maybe even taste some water droplets too. Not to mention, moving their arms around in the water is brilliant for developing their motor skills as well.

Create play experiences

To prevent bath time from becoming a negative experience, there are lots of different things you can do to make it exciting. Using bath toys that rattle or bath toys that flash can help you to not only keep your little one distracted whilst they’re in the bath, but also stimulate all of their senses whilst they’re playing in the water.

You can also experiment with using different household items in the bath too and you will be surprised by how much fun you can have with the most basic items. Take a plastic cup, for example, simply scooping up the water and pouring it back into the bath will be fun for your little one. You could even try using a kitchen colander to make rain whilst you’re in the bath as well.

Read bath books together

Keeping your little one entertained in the bath is really easy when you use bath books and these are great for introducing children to reading. Most bath books are really colourful to capture your baby’s attention and they will help to develop their cognitive and language skills.

For something even more interactive than reading a book, you can try singing together in the bath and there are lots of nursery rhymes that are perfect for bath time, such as ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’. If you’re in the bath with your little one, you can even do the actions to nursery rhymes together, enabling them to strengthen both their speaking and motor skills.

Fill the bath with bubbles

Bubbles are considered a must-have when you’re wanting to make bath time both fun and educational, and the strange texture of bubbles makes them perfect for sensory play. Your little one will be intrigued by bubbles and want to explore what they can do with them.

Playing with bubbles in the bath can even help with hand-eye coordination as well. Picking up the bubbles and blowing them across your little one’s field of vision will encourage them to reach out for them and try to catch them in their hands. You can also blow bigger bubbles with baby shampoo and trying to pop these as they float through the air is great for coordination.
